NFL Draft
Seems like every year during the draft I'm reminded of how crazy it was Graham Harrell wasn't drafted. I don't pretend to be an NFL talent evaluator but Tannehill and Weeded are first rounders and Harrell barely got invited to camp? Doesn't make much sense to me. Sorry for beating a long dead horse. Looks like Tannehill will have a great chance to start this year for the Dolphins. Anybody buying into the hype?

Help! Move The TSU Game To San Antonio
Texas State’s football stadium sits 30,000 according to the information I have. I’d like to go to the game, but I doubt if I would be able to obtain a ticket at a small stadium like that. I would estimate that Texas Tech’s fans would supply the stadium’s capacity on a bad day. Is it too late for the respective schools to explore the feasibility of moving the game to the Alamo Dome? No doubt TSU is looking for a big payoff hosting the game as the revenues would stay with them. I don’t know if TTU would get a share of the revenues. And if all TSU is looking to get is their stadium’s capacity in generated revenue, moving the game to a larger venue may make for a win/win/win/win for all concerned. I don’t know how or who to approach in getting consideration for moving the game 45 miles down IH35 so that all the parties can benefit. The win/win/win/win parties I’m thinking about are TSU in getting not less than the revenue their stadium would generate, all interested TTU fans getting access to tickets, TTU getting a share of the excess revenues that would be generated by getting a larger venue than what TSU’s stadium could generate, and for San Antonio to get extra out of town people into their hotels and restaurants as well as to get revenue from the use of the stadium. So how to get this idea of doing a feasibility study for moving the game to the Alamo Dome? Anyone have Holcutt’s phone/email address? How about TSU’s athletic director? HELP!
Who is the slowest Wildebeest? It is time for the Lion.
The honey colored grass hides the approaching lion from the herd of grazing wildebeest. Taught muscles explode, launching the lion towards the herd. The entire herd flees the lion. As the lion approaches the herd, the trailing few wildebeests become the focus. The distance between the last of the herd and the hungry lion closes, closes, closes.........you know what happens next.
It is nearing the time for Hocutt to become lion and eat a wildebeest. Is he approaching the herd at all? Maybe. Not to maul the healthiest, fastest wildebeest, but to devour whichever animal proves to be the weakest. Kristy Curry has been at TTU for 6 years and posted a 6-12 conference record in 2011. Spencer is in his 4th season. His baseball team is 3-11 in conference play this year. Tuberville is approaching his 4th season. His team won 2 conference games and lost 7.
It appears to me, the TTU herd has forgotten there is a lion at all.

Cowboy In Logo Looks Sad
Does anyone else think the rider on the DTN logo looks sad and defeated? We all know life is dull now that Tommy T has worked his magic on Tech but couldn't the logo at least attempt to put a brave face on the situation? C'mon Seth, hire a professional graphic designer and put some fire under that horse and cowboy! Maybe the horse could be rearing on his back legs ala Roy Rogers. A cowboy hat would be nice too. Maybe something like this...
Why I hate the college football polls
So, in light of the BCS being considered right now, I want to note that altho I do hate the BCS, it's more because it's based on the polls rather than because it only does #1 v. #2 (altho, that part sucks too). My own perspective is that we should have at least a 4 team playoff that pits the conference champions of 4 16 team conferences against one another. Anyone outside the conference, well build up FCS ranks.
The primary reason I say this is because saying "what about #2 if 1 & 2 are in the same conference?" is ridiculous. #2 (like Alabama this year) is STILL #2, they LOST to #1. If we don't have enough games to have everyone play each other, then we don't have enough for rematches. But regarding the title of this post, I have the following stats. The BCS has existed since the 1998 season (championship played in 1999). Across the same span (the last 14 years), here's how that plays out:
- BCS: 14 Teams in final game, 11 different champions, 0 (0%) first time champions, 78.6% of teams that played in at least 1 BCS game won a BCS championship
- Super Bowl: 18 Teams, 10 different champions, 5 (50%) first time champions (Counted Baltimore & Indianapolis as 0.5 champs, since Baltimore(city) had won previously as Colts), 55.6% of teams that played in at least 1 Super Bowl won a championship (over that span)
- NCAA BB Finals: 17 Teams, 9 different champions, 4 (44.4%) first time champions, 52.9% of teams that played in at least 1 Final won a championship (over that span)
- NBA Finals: 14 Teams, 7 different champions, 3 (42.9%) first time champions, 50% of teams that played in at least 1 Finals series won a championship (over that span)
- College World Series: 16 Teams, 9 different champions, 4 (44.4%) first time champions, 56.3% of teams that played in at least 1 Final series won a championship (over that span)
- World Series: 17 Teams, 9 different champions, 2 (22.2%) first time champions, 52.9% of teams that played in at least 1 World Series won a championship (over that span)
- Stanley Cup (in 1 less year due to a strike): 17 Teams, 10 different champions, 4 (40%) first time champions, 58.8% of teams that played in at least 1 Stanley Cup Finals won the Cup (in that span)
- ALL other championships have about a 50-60% championship win rate of teams that played for championship, BCS win rate is almost 80% (about 20 percentage points higher than next closest)
- ALL other sports (including baseball which goes back to the 19th century and the NBA which has NINE of it's last 14 championships tied up in the Lakers and spurs) have MULTIPLE first time champs in the last 15 years, BCS has NONE
- BCS also has the LOWEST number of teams that have only played in the championship game once, vs ALL other championships (NBA next closest with 2 more teams that got a chance than the BCS in the last 14 years)
Your not so obvious but favorite TTU football player of the past???
TTU football news gets scarce this time of year. Having stated this, my appetite for TTU football conversation and news barely declines.
Who is your favorite football player that most fans would not guess? Why?
Mine is Boyd Cowen of the late 80's.
In the 80s era, it's easy to identify a favorite from the likes of Billy Joe, James Gray, Tyrone Thurman or maybe Wayne Walker. Cowen was the working class, blue collar sort of player who seemed to be oblivious to his lack of pedigree.
Not exceedingly athletic, big or highly acclaimed, Cowen had a high football I.Q. and a keen knack for head hunting unsuspecting receivers cruising across the middle.
He's my unsung favorite from the 80's.
Arkansas Coach Bobby Petrino Fired
Wow, kind of saw it coming. Still though, your going to get a divided fan base that wanted him to stay. I'm jumping on the Art Briles to Arkansas right now! Seriously though, who do you get at this time of year? Hire an interm coach? Us Red Raiders know how it is to lose a beloved coach. Gotta admit though, watching Arkansas AD up there crying makes you realize how much they didn't want to do this.
OT: Self Inflicted Wounds
Read the article linked below. Unfortunately, the off the field bad news continues. Regardless of what some want to believe, there is a contingent of our fan base who have lost perspective, and are now rooting for us to fail. As the article proves, not only do these misguided "fans" want the football program to fail, but they are also attacking our very school. Tier One is such an important endeavor for all Tech grads, and it is simply criminal that Tech alums would undermine those efforts because of coaching change.
As if our handling of the Leach firing was not embarrassing enough, we now have our own alums throwing gasoline on the fire. I am just ready for this all to end. Our school deserves better than what it got in December of 2009, and it deserves better than these vindicitve lunatics.
