Double-T Nation Daily Diatribe :: 03.18.10

Big Shout-Out: A few weeks ago I mentioned that I was a little tired because I had gone to a Dallas Mavericks basketball game the night before. Lo and behold, I got an incredibly nice email from a DTN reader, RRChica, who also works for the Mavs and offered myself and my wife tickets to last night's game. Well, last night was the game she arranged for us to go to. My wife and I met RRChica thanked for giving us seats and then told us that she was placing Double-T Nation on some of the signs around the arena. What?
Shocked and flattered I waited (it's one of those rolling ads that mentions 15 to 20 businesses and each one is on for 20 seconds or so) and RRChica snapped a shot of DTN at the Mavs:

Holla!
So, a big huge thanks to RRChica. My old lady and myself had a great time last night. Our seats were great, much, much appreciated.

I think you should also be able to watch the games live here on DTN (this is me hoping that the widget works) and consider this your open thread:

Wishful Thinking: I missed this yesterday, but apparently Denton Ryan's Scotty Young, and future Texas Tech quarterback, threw a complete game, striking out 14 and allowing only 1 hit. It's wishful thinking in that I could only hope that Young could pitch for Texas Tech, but from all accounts, it appears that Young is a heck of a pitcher, with an incredible arm and we better start praying he doesn't get a huge offer to go play baseball in the MLB Draft.
New Assistant Coach: I'm surprised this wasn't mentioned on the official site, but Amarillo.com's Lance Lahnert reported that Scott Parr, the offensive coordinator at West Texas A&M, will be an assistant coach with Texas Tech:
Scott Parr: The West Texas A&M offensive coordinator has landed an assistant coaching job with Texas Tech. Parr has already started his new job and Tech is lucky to get this dedicated and talented young coach. He will be missed around here.
Here's Parr's bio page on the WTA&M website and apparently he likes offense and puts up big numbers:
The man behind WT's record-breaking offensive unit is Scott Parr, who returns for his third season as the team's offensive coordinator. Parr initially joined the Buff staff in 2006, splitting coordinating duties that season.
During the 2008 season, Parr's offensive unit scored 50 or more points on six occasions while breaking no fewer than 64 team, conference and NCAA playoff records. Among them were records for most yards total offense (7,079), total offesnive yards per game (544.5), total points scored (626) and points per game (48.1). Under his guiadance, quarterback Keith Null shattered the WT and LSC records for passing yardage (5,097), passing yards/game (392.1) and highest completion percentage/season (67.5), among others.

Double-T Nation 2010 NCAA Bracket
I invite you to completely kick my rear in this NCAA bracket challenge. I chose CBS because they've been a good partner with SBN and we'll be rolling out some stuff with CBS so that you can watch the games from DTN and comment while filing out TPS reports and watching NCAA Tournament games. In any event, you'll have to sign-up, but that shouldn't be a big deal.

I'm also throwing in a DTN t-shirt to the winner. If that's not motivation, I don't know what is.

Post Game Thoughts :: Texas Tech Red Raiders 87, Seton Hall Pirates 69
Result :: Win : 87-69 : SB Nation Box Score
Record :: 18-15, 4-12
Up Next :: 03.18-22.2010 : Jacksonville Dolphins (20-12, 14-6)
The Result :: Punched Below the Belt, But Keeping Composure: If you haven't seen the video, it's embedded below the jump. Long story short, PF Darko Cohadarevic was punched in the nads . . . twice . . . by PF Herb Pope, the leading rebounder of the Big East, who was ejected from the game. I'm not sure that Pope would have mattered as Texas Tech hit 50% of their shots and looked really in sync for most of the game. Seton Hall looked out of sorts for most of the game, especially offensively, their big player, Jeremy Hazell, had a cut on his shooting hand although this was my first time to watch Seton Hall, the Pirates just looked out of sync.
The Storylines ::
Taking One for the Team: There's no doubt that Cohadarevic can be a real instigator, which means that I'm usually on high alert when it comes to Cohadarevic. He has no problem getting under the skin of opposing players, but what Pope did to Cohadarevic is uncalled for, whether or not Darko was pushing Pope's button's or not. I thought I had a bad day at work yeterday, but if that happens to me . . . TWICE! . . . then I think Darko has me beat. I can't say that I know the personalities of any Seton Hall players, but you just can't lose your cool in a situation like that. And to be clear, in watching Darko the first 6 minutes of the game, there was nothing there that would cause me to think that Darko was doing anything that I thought was out of line, but Seton Hall senior John Garcia did:
"I wasn’t surprised," Seton Hall senior John Garcia said. "Because on previous plays, the big kid elbowed him in the back of the head. Then Herb kind of let it go and the kid did the same thing on the next play coming down the court and was talking at him about it. So I saw it coming. If you’re the refs and you let certain things go, it’s tough."But honestly, Herb’s got to keep his cool. At the end of the day, it ended up hurting our team, but I could never fault Herb. He’s been that one guy all season, when it comes to effort and heart on the court."
I went back and watched those first 6 minutes just to make sure that there was nothing there that made me think that Darko did anything other than playing in the post in the NCAA's. In any event, Darko still played 20 minutes, finished with 12 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 TO's. Texas Tech had good games from their centers tonight, and Darko led the way.

The Game: It's really tough covering losing teams, and the baseball team is no different. Pitching, defense, and according to LAJ's Watson, clutch hitting with 2 outs. Nevertheless, the pitching staff gave up 13 runs, all earned, and the defense had 2 errors, another game with multiple errors. P Louis Head (2.1 IP; 5 H; 4 ER; 2 BB; 1 SO) started the game, but couldn't get out of the 3rd inning. Colt Farrar (2.2 IP; 4 H; 3 ER; 1 BB; 2 SO) got the loss, but it was former closer, Jay Johnson (2.0 IP; 4 H; 3 ER; 1 BB; 1 SO) that bothers me the most. Johnson was supposed to be one of the top pitchers for this team, but he has struggled mightily thus far this season. Offensively, RF Jamodrick McGruder is getting more and more playing time, and producing (2-4; 2 R; 1 RBI; 1 BB) and C Kevin Whitehead (1-4; 1 HR; 1 R; 2 RBI) homered, but that just wasn't enough to keep pace.
Recap: As mentioned above, LAJ's George Watson has a great recap of the action:
When a team is in a slump like Texas Tech has been the last two weeks, it can seem like each night something different keeps things going in the wrong direction.On Tuesday, it was Tech’s lack of two-out hitting and Texas State’s ability to do just that.
The Bobcats scored six runs with two outs in an inning, and that helped them run Tech’s losing streak to five straight with a 13-7 win at Dan Law Field.
The Red Raiders (8-10) now must go into their Big 12 Conference series opener Friday at Texas A&M having lost eight of their last nine and with no momentum to speak of. Another loss would tie last year’s season-high six-game losing streak, from which the Red Raiders struggled to recover.
Post Game Quotes (Link: Head coach Dan Spencer is typically pretty up-beat, but he sounds pretty down right now:
On his thoughts heading into the Texas A&M series this weekend:
"We'll adjust those things tomorrow. I didn't say a lot to them at the end of the night tonight. We'll adjust those things and try to correct them for A&M. We are what we are right now. We're kind of scuffling and that's a tough place to go when you're not playing well but that's what is next on the schedule."

Tale of the Tape: Part 2 - Comparing Performance
In this second installment of Tale of the Tape, we compare Leach's and Tuberville's respective performances.
In Tale of the Tape Part I we established that the scheduling differences between Leach's Texas Tech teams, Tuberville's Auburn teams and Tuberville's Mississippi's teams were largely insignificant.
There was little to no difference in the quality of the non-conference schedule.
Tuberville's Auburn teams played against more ranked opponents than did Leach, but that difference stemmed primarily from playing in the SEC, and accounted for 7 more ranked opponents over a 10 year period.
However, when we examine the degree of difficulty of the ranked conference opponents, we see that Texas Tech faced more challenging competition than did Auburn by virtue of having to play Oklahoma and Texas on an annual basis.
Having established that the opponents faced by the two coaches were more or less equal, we now move on to compare their performances.
(Updated March 17, 2010. Corrected bad loss calculation (added loss to Kansas in 2001 as bad loss to Leach's record) and elaborated on the subject of division titles in the conclusion. Minor grammar adjustments.)
