Big 12 Roundtable - The No-Name Edition

Thanks to Kansas State blog MidWestCoast Bias for this week's questions for the Big 12 Round Table. Let's go.

If you could steal another coach at any level (head, assistant, etc.) from another school, who would it be and why?

After seeing this video, I thought I'd love to have Will Muschamp (LANGUAGE WARNING: Earmuffs for the little ones):

However, I get the feeling that Coach McNeill is a lot like this. I'll take Coach Frank Beamer as his prowess with coaching special is legendary and with Coach McNeill's elevation to defensive coordinator, it would be interesting to see if Beamer could bring the same to Lubbock.

What two teams will play for the Big XII Championship and why?

I like the Sooners to win the South. Right now, I think that Texas Tech is the second best team in the South with Texas a close third.

In the North I still think Mizzou is my favorite. Daniel knows what it's like to got through a Big 12 conference schedule and he knows it's not easy. Of course, of the teams that have the easiest road to the Big 12 title game from the North, it would have to be Kansas. It would completely appropriate for the Big 12 North Division to rest on the last conference game of the year for Mizzou and Kansas: November 24th.

What is the best bowl game your team has a realistic shot at and, if your team has a shot, who would you like to play in said bowl?

Realistically, I believe that the Red Raiders have the opportunity to go to the Cotton Bowl and I'd love to see the opponent be Kentucky. I'd be satisfied with the Alamo Bowl, only because it would be relatively easy for met to get there and watch the game in person.

If given the opportunity, would you keep the Big XII status quo or kick out a team and go to a Big 10-style conference play?

Status quo. I like the divisions, although this year, it's proving to be an easy year for the Jayhawks in terms of schedule, but that's not their fault. There's just something special about the conference title game, a game that I'd love to see Texas Tech play one day. Conferences build history and continuity by sticking together, and there will always be bad teams and good teams (i.e. Nebraska fell quickly and Kansas' rise has also been relatively fast). Things tend to even out and this conference has an excellent blend of teams.

Rank the Big XII teams.

  1. Oklahoma: The Sooners are the team to beat. No questions asked.
  2. Kansas: A seemingly easy schedule means they could go undefeated heading into finale with Mizzou (Watch out for OSU).
  3. Missouri: Even though they lost, I still think they're they best team in the North Division.
  4. Texas Tech: What are the Red Raiders made of? Hostile road environment? Check. Talented opposing offense? Check. I can't wait.
  5. Kansas State: I probably should have the Wildcats ahead of the Red Raiders as they've been good almost all year.
  6. Texas: Improved against Iowa State and should have an easy time against Baylor.
  7. Colorado: They'll be even better next year.
  8. Oklahoma State: The more they win the better the last second loss by Texas Tech seems.
  9. Texas A&M: A bad loss to Texas Tech, they need a rebound game, who could that be . . . Nebraska comes calling.
  10. Nebraska: Definition of cluster-f*#@.
  11. Baylor: The lovable Bears will beat the Aggies this year, please Lord, let it be so.
  12. Iowa State: I got nothing.

bowl
I would like to see us go the fiesta, with OU going to the national championship. Although it would be nice to go the fiesta by winning the big 12, and there is a chance we could run the table and do it. The cotton bowl would be nice too however we might be playing Florida in it. It could be a good game.

coach
Gene Chizick or Stoops(either one). I know Ruffin has our D playing excellent football, but one of these guys would be a big boost for Defensive recruiting. Ruffins biggest challenge is this week.

I vote no on Chizick.
He owns a UT National Championship so congrats to him, but he did it with an incredibly talented team. He returned one in 2006 that was horrible against the pass. The Texas defense was pretty damn good in 2004 before he showed up and I'd just as soon place a larger emphasis on the '05-'06 collapse as I would the "improvement" of the '04-'05 defense from ~20th in the nation to a top 10 unit, though remember that OU was significantly worse in '05 than they were in the years before or after. The bottom line is that he inherited a great defense at UT that wasn't much improved when he left. They were 23rd in the nation in '04 with Chizick and 24th in 2006.

He is a great defensive coordinator, but in my opinion not good enough to sway me from Ruffin given the way he's coached thus far. If there is some kind of monumental defensive collapse -- and that's very likely given the opponents we play -- I'll consider a change of scenery, but Gene Chizick doesn't excite me one bit.

Re: Recruiting. Mack Brown recruited well before Chizick and continues to recruit well without him. There's a question of how much we want to attribute the recruiting success over 2 years to their defensive coordinator.

All said, if we had to settle for a proven DC like Gene Chizick, I wouldn't complain, either.
