Leach gets "Largest fine issued to date by the Conference"

Update [2007-11-13 13:54:23 by Seth C]: I'm on my lunch break, but thanks to djollie111 for the diary update.

From Big12Sports.com:

Nov. 13, 2007

In accordance with the Big 12 Conference Principles and Standards of Sportsmanship, the Conference has issued a public reprimand of Texas Tech University head football coach Mike Leach for his comments following Saturday's game against Texas.

In addition, the Conference also assessed a $10,000 fine for Leach's post-game remarks and put him on notice that any future such behavior will result in a more serious penalty, including a possible suspension.

"Coach Leach's public statements called into question the integrity and competence of game officials and the Conference's officiating program," stated Commissioner Dan Beebe. "Accordingly the seriousness of this violation warrants a public reprimand and the largest fine issued to date by the Conference."

Beebe noted that coaches are an integral part of the game officials' evaluation process, which enables them to express concerns and address specific issues privately. Coaches are also able to submit video of calls for review to the Conference for feedback.

The Big 12 Principles and Standards of Sportsmanship, including the procedure for processing possible violations, can be found beginning on page 2 of the Big 12 Handbook, located on the conference web site.

$10,000 is a good price to pay only if the Big XII or NCAA does something about the officiating. I'm not saying anyone is getting paid off or what not, but I don't think anyone on the officiating staff or booth review staff should be in any way, shape, or form affiliated with the teams playing or the hometowns (and maybe even states) that the teams are from.

"Calling out the Officials"
I do not know what took Leach this long to say something. The game last year was one of the most gross injustices I have witnessed. And this crap just keeps happening! I agree that this year it isn't why we lost the game but like Leach said there is to much invested on getting these players ready each Saturday for something like this to happen. Why is everyone so naive to believe that there isn't some sort of corruption going on with the league protecting the so called power schools! Especially if it involves going to a BCS bowl. That's a lot of money involved. It's the non-calls or phatom calls that get to me and I suspect it's what really pissed Leach off too! I have played a lot of sports in my lifetime and I could not stand an official who couldn't take being questioned and now in just about every sport you cannot bring the officiating up without consequence from some league official. There is nothing fair about this system and it needs to be changed. I had a question for those of you who might know: I thought each school knows in advance what officials are doing their games from week to week, if so then is the coach not allowed to issue an objection against certain officials? Thanks for you comments.
