Texas Tech Friday Morning Notes - Playing Better Than The Guys Who Have Been Here Edition

Texas Tech Basketball:

The Texas Tech Red Raiders took care of business yesterday, beating Alaska Anchorage, 74-47. As liquidsmoke and ayleein already noted, freshman guard John Roberson had a big day, as did the other two freshmen, D'Walyn Roberts and Mike Singletary, who got the start. I'm working on a review of the game (I didn't get to see it, but will base thoughts on the boxscore). The Red Raiders will face off against the Gonzaga Bulldogs, which tips off tonight at 11:00 p.m., so those of you who like to stay up late, I'll post a preview and an open game-day thread, so feel free to comment.

LAJ's Jeff Walker checks in with a game story and has this from Coach Knight on the play of the freshmen:

"All three have played varying amounts as we've gone along," Tech head coach Bob Knight said. "The other side of (the) coin is that they're playing better than guys who have been here have been playing."

Sounds pretty clear that the opportunity for the guys who have been around may not last as long with the improving play of the three freshmen.

Coach Knight had this to say about the overall play of the team:

"We got off to a very good start, obviously, and I think that made a huge difference in the way the game went," Knight said. "That's the best that we've played all year. We had things going on both ends of the floor. ... We didn't play as well in the second half except for some moments, but it was a good start for us."

Big 12 and College Football:

Here's today's major college football lineup:

  • Nebraska at Colorado - 11:00 PM
  • Mississippi at Mississippi State - 11:30 PM
  • Wyoming at Colorado State - 1:00 PM
  • Texas (11) at Texas A&M - 2:30 PM
  • Boise State (17) at Hawaii (13) - 8:05 PM

I don't know who to cheer for between UT and A&M. On one hand I don't want UT to have a chance to play for the Big 12 Championship and a victory over Aggie coupled with an OU loss would ensure that. On the other hand, with an Aggie win, UT has a lesser bowl, no chance at the Big 12 Championship and Aggie then has to fire it's head coach who would have beaten their rival for two straight years. Since chaos in sports is good, I'll pick the later.

Enjoy your football today.
