Coach Leach and Rapid Cognition

I don't know why I have this incredibly sinking feeling, but I get the feeling that Leach is gone. Keep in mind that I'm not basing this off of any insider knowledge. I'm in the same boat as most of you guys, I don't know anyone important, I'm just a guy with a blog, but I've got a bad feeling about this.

I'm reading Blink, by Malcolm Gladwell, it focuses on the idea of "rapid cognition", or better explained, a gut reaction. Gladwell does an incredible job of explaining how an initial reaction to a particular situation is typically the correct reaction and that reaction is based on you taking in a lot of different information and making a split decision based on that information. So why mention Blink? My "gut" reaction to Leach's candidacy for the UCLA job isn't good, but from reading Gladwell's book, my bad feeling is based on information that I've gathered, whether it be consciously or subconsciously. Since I don't deal in the subconscious, let's deal with what I do know that bothers me:

  • California: Leach does have some California connections as he was born in Northern California and went to law school at Pepperdine University, which is near or around Malibu. (Digression #1: Leach, who grew up a Mormon went to Pepperdine, which is a private school affiliated with the Church of Christ.) I could understand how Leach might want to get a little closer to where the climate is nice almost 365 days a year, so it's not a stretch to think that he would want to move back to a place he enjoyed. I probably would have enjoyed a law school a lot more if I had not ever intended to actually practice law, which is what appears Leach did.
  • Leach and Alabama: Okay, when I checked my news reader this afternoon, I couldn't help but notice EDSBS's passing reference (pun intended) to Coach Leach's inquiry into the Alabama job last year. I don't know what to say. I'll be honest, that kind of freaks me out a little bit. I wonder how accurate this is, but if we take Orson at face value then this makes me nervous. This tells me two things. First, this tells me that Leach thinks he's ready for the big time, even if the big time isn't ready for him. Second, Leach is willing to look around, even on his own.
  • UCLA's Defined List: UCLA pretty much has a defined list of three candidates, which means that it's a short list and I think it's safe to assume that Leach is on it. Boise State's Peterson is at the top of that list, but Peterson is said not to be interested (H-T to BruinsNation). Coaches Hot Seat Blog also weighs in on the UCLA open and Leach is on a short list of five (Also H-T to BruinsNation). (Digression #2: Did you know that you can take a gander at Coach Leach's Contract? Yeah, it's available via the aforementioned Coaches Hot Seat.) The fact that the LA Times article and various other reports, it's pretty clear that coach Leach is on that list and he has been contacted.

So if I had to explain why I'm nervous, that's it. Call it gut, call it intuition, call it rapid cognition, call it whatever you will, but the longer this goes, the more nervous I get.

With all of that being said, I'd like to ask Ricky Bobby to say a Baby Jesus prayer for all Texas Tech fans who want Coach Leach to stay in the South Plains (LANGUAGE WARNING):

Leach
I am scared too seth, but I did read a great article in texas highways on Leach. He really did seem to enjoy Tech, Lubbock, and his coaching job. If he does go he has boosted the program to where we can get a good replacement. I do think we are married to the spread offense. If any other offense comes in it will kill this school bc that would be about 8 years of recruiting down the drain. However I do feel that Leach is a respectable guy. Tech gave him his first head coaching job, he does have more freedom than most coaches here, and about 95% of his team is coming back next year. I am about 90% sure he will stay, but there is that other 10%.

Yep
He's as good as gone. Let's hope Meyers doesn't do something stupid like naming Sonny Dykes the head coach...or some retread has been.

For some weird reason, I see Tech getting a guy who will use us a stepping stone after 4 yrs.

This would be a CRITICAL hire because we aren't OU or UT or AM in recruiting circles.

Why do you hate leach so much? You have been calling for his resignation for like 3wks the dude has truely blessed texas tech in getting us in the national spotlight. Our game against virgina is on the front page of both foxsports and espns websites. That would never have happend with another coach. I will agree with you that his lack of defense stomach turning, but I really think the guy saw the light this year and that is why lyle resigned.

Leach's flirtations
Let's not forget about how Leach has tossed his hat into the ring of what seems like every opening to come up in the last 5 years.

For my money, good riddance w/that attitude. Stay or go, but make up your mind. It impacts recruiting.

As for being married to the spread, there aren't any new young coaches coming up who don't run a version of it. A pro-style would be tough to adjust to excitement wise. Surely, Meyers knows that.

salary
I don't think he will get this kind of money at UCLA. From what I have heard on their blogs their AD doesn't pay very well. This maybe to our advantage since they would have to buyout his contract. I also think myers needs to just give him a raise to keep him hear and keep his head out of the clouds. Maybe even an anchor chain to keep him from even leaving the athletic facilities.

What did you have for Supper?
"Why do you doubt your senses?"

"Because," said Scrooge, "a little thing affects them. A slight disorder of the stomach makes them cheats.  You may be an undigested bit of beef, a blot of mustard, a crumb of cheese, a fragment of an underdone potato.  There's more of gravy than of grave about you, whatever you are!"

You got to watch those gut feelings, especially when combined with suspect information.

Napoleon at Waterloo!
Custer at little big horn!

UCLA would have to double his salary for him to keep the same life style he enjoys living in Lubbock. They do not have a history of wanting to pay that kind of money.
Yea, I know that lifestyle and Lubbock is an oxymoron.

Think of it this way, that $10,000 fit he threw at UT.  It would fly him and the family to Santa Barbara and back in this baby..... http://citationx.cessna.com/
and that includes the pilots.

Yea baby, fly to S.B. do a little surfing let the wife and kids drop a few bills shopping, eat a fine meal, watch the sun set over the Catalina Islands fly back to Lubbock; no traffic, no state income tax, no OH MY GOD property taxes, no west coast media to chew on your butt.

Like I said in an earlier post the mind of Leach is a scary place to go and bringing up money flies in the face of my concept of Leach being a Renaissance man with a certain touch of the quixotic.

Maybe it was that Progresso Soup I had for supper.

Maybe it's just my hopes,
but I really don't think that Leach is leaving.  I just don't believe that he is going to leave.....this year.  I'm looking at this from what I like to think is a logical standpoint being this:

--Look at the team that we have coming back next season.  Leach has spent 8 years recruiting his type of players, and putting his system into place just the way he likes it.  Next year looks to be his best shot at the Big 12 title, so I don't think he will take the UCLA job.

--I don't really think that Leach would want to make a lateral move in coaching.  Unless he is just tired of Tech football (which I am pretty sure that he isn't) there would be no reason to make this move.  You can point out all the ties that he has to the west coast and everything else, but I'm just not buying it yet.  UCLA is no better of a team than Tech, so why would Leach make this move?

--I firmly believe that Mike Leach loves the drama and rumors.  There have been many rumors over the past couple of years and none of them have ever amounted to anyting.  Last year I though that Leach would go to Miami.....he didn't.  This year we are all worried that he might be going to Arkansas or UCLA.....he probably won't.  I really think that Leach likes to know that he is a candidate and likes to put his name out there to get his "market value."  Do I like it?  No.  But that seems to be the Leach trend.

Bottom line is that rumors are really stupid, and I'm not buying this one.  It just doesn't make sense.  I could understand after this season if we have another 8 win year, but not now.

I think unless
Something really pissed Leach off, He will not take the UCLA job.

I go back to what Leach said some years ago after the California win when he was heavily recruited to leave Tech.

He said that he would consider the BYU job if they offered and with the right kind of compensation.

He also said he would consider coaching in California. WHO? USC.

He turned down jobs that did offer a bit more money than Tech. So its not about the money in general. Leach does like Lubbock. Lubbock like it or not has an extremely large Mormon population and has one of 5 Temples outside of Utah.

Right now I am not worried about the UCLA job. Under the employment rules, UCLA has to ask Texas Tech specifically Myers to talk with Leach. Otherwise, UCLA could face a fine not only by the NCAA but there is other issue which the Coach could get into trouble. Look to LSU. Michigan had to ask LSU permission to approach their coach. Same is true here.

Leach is always on a short list every year! I am glad that he is! I also think that Tech needs to improve his contract in 2009 when it comes up for renewal. Right now, Leach makes roughly, 2.5 million here in Lubbock. Thats pretty respectible. That puts Leach in the top 15 in the nation. I do think that Leach if he does win the Big 12 next year, that he should get the famed comment he made of the Million dollar Baby contract. Meaning that his base salary is 1 million or better. The program can afford it.

The Football program allows for 14.6 million in salaries right now. The current salaries are not that high. but this should give you the potiential of what Tech could do in contract renewal if Leach does step up to the plate and fixes the defense by making the smart choice of DC to the point that Tech really kills their oppents rather than just ride a roller coaster of a season.

When will I really be worried? If the contract renewal is kind of poor after Leach has delivered.

I would suggest that everyone click on Leach's contract to see what Tech expected Leach to achieve by Dec 2009. 9-3 season at min or a Big 12 title.

Leach is expected to get to the 9-3 as a common season finish.  Also Leach is expected to get at least on Big 12 Title.

Expect to see the National Title clause to be inserted into the new renewal contract in 2009.

But for now people should relax. UCLA although has said they wanted Leach, So did Alabama who offered an ungodly amount of money. The most in the NCAA for head coach. I am not suprised that Leach at least looked. Why not as Coach to look at what the guy who would earn the most get in compensation. It just helps Leach to ask for more in a renewal later. But people seem to forget that Leach was listed for several coaching positions across the nation every year. Leach himself said that 90% of them were suprises to him as the schools never actually approached him.

What would be of suprise is if UCLA actually did contact Leach officially. They may have done it unofficially but that could be a problem for both.  But as far as I know UCLA has not officially contacted Mike. That could change but honestly, I just do not see Leach leaving Lubbock right now. UCLA money wise is actually on par with Tech. So there is no huge jump in money. Take a look at the UCLA budget. They honestly just do not have the deep pockets right now just to offer a huge bonus to Leach or more than a maybe $50,000 more a year in base. It not as simple as it once was. NCAA rules and State hiring practices prevents individuals from suddently paying huge amounts of money to a program. Although, there is people known as friends of the University who helps unvirsities with building projects and logistics. But actual cash transaction into a program either for a coach or players is forbidden. True there are ways around that. But its just not likely.

From a friend who is a prof at UCLA who was a buddy to college together, tells me that all the major alumi there are pushing for Mariucci. The fact that an alumi has sent two times for Mariucci to fly out to California via alumi private jet to meet with both school and alumi tells how hard they are trying to get him.  As for Leach, he is the preverbial what if coach.  Peterson is on the list and he really wants to leave Boise State. He has made it very clear that he is wanting to be in the Pac 10. I think its a general.

From my understanding, the short list is Mariucci then Peterson then Walker then Leach then Neuheisel. No one at UCLA right now wants Neuheisel. So he is the preverbial out of the running. Leach is the safety valve they think they have.  If they are nor careful, they will be like Michigan an have all their short list turn them down.

I am sick of this!!!
Let me start by saying I love Coach Leach and all the he has done for the program.  At the same time I'm sick and tired of wondering if he'll stay or if he'll go.  How about a little loyalty to the school and fans who gave you a shot when everyone else thought you were too quirky?  It would seem real easy for Coach Leach to simply say that he is flattered by all the talk, but he is staying put.

I also wonder what effect the rumors of his leaving has on recruiting every year?  Has anyone thought of asking one of the heavily recruited kids to see what he has told them about the 2008 season?

Maybe instead of worrying every year about what OUR future holds, we should show Coach Leach the door and go about the business of finding someone who can continue to take the program in the direction that Coach Leach has it headed.  I mean it is going to happen eventually, right?

That being said, who should we get?  Does anyone have any thoughts on the Tulane coach?  What about the OC from Florida?  Just two quick guys that seem to know a little about offense too.

Leach
I spoke to a buddy of mine on the alumni assoc board of directors today about other general stuff, but Leach came up. He has it on good authority from a buddy of his working at another school's athletic department that the reason Leach is still in Lubbock has as much to do with the fact that he's a terrible interview for openings as it does his supposed affection for Tech/Lubbock.

BYU was willing to hire him a few years back, but his initial interview, which got zero pub, was a total flop.

by Tech92 on Dec 4, 2007 1:31 PM CST   0 recs

I don't buy into the rumors
The media puts out names without even knowing if the coaches are interested or not.  They always have and always will, because it makes for good TV.  What else are they going to do with the 3 weeks before bowl games start?  Do all of you remember after last season when they all but said that Leach would be the next Miami head coach?  I do.  What happened with that situation?  Well, after it was all over with, Leach admitted that he never even had any official communication with them.

I don't really have a problem with Leach's name being out there.  You can't blame Leach for wanting to at least have his name on a couple of school's lists.  It's really a pretty good sign for us, that means that Leach is doing a good job and getting recognition for it.

I really don't think that it affects recruiting as much as we all think.  If it did, no recruits would ever commit to a school until right before the signing day.  I could see it being a huge deal with recruiting if a coach actually left, but just rumors aren't hurting anything.  Leach is making in-home visits, and I doubt he is telling these recruits to come to Tech because he WON'T be there.

Give me a break.  Leach isn't going to another school.  Both Leach and UCLA have both admitted that there hasn't even been any communication between them.  He is focused on recruiting and on beating Virginia.

The BYU interview
was before he was a coach at Oklahoma.  That is ancient history. Leach was considered a rookie coach when he applied for the job.

Let me repeat what I said before, Leach is here to stay!

Only if and I used the words IF!, Leach was to leave Tech is based on three things.

  1. Tech pisses him off by some reason or another.
  2. BYU offers and puts up a huge amount of money which they can't do right now. ( Leach said that they can't put up the money he was wanting from them)
  3. USC offered for Him
If those three things do not happen, then He stays in Lubbock. Those are from his own lips!

Leach expects to stay in Lubbock for several years to come. He has even talked about retirement out of Tech. So people need not get too caught up in these yearly rumor lists that he is on.

True he may be on several lists. But the truth is that most schools do not contact all the people on their lists.

Many people when a job opens up produce a list of coaches they would like to see head up their school. From that list, they get serious. That's when you take note of the official requests and contacts of coaches.

Right now, Leach is the only coach on the so call short list that UCLA has not talked to. Although they have denied talking to anyone, the truth is that they have talked to three of those on the list. and the three they have talked to want the job at UCLA.

In case you have forgotten who they have talked to about the head coaching job, it is Neuheisel, Walker and Perterson. Mariucci has met with the Alums twice and has been at a function with the UCLA administration who hires. More or less the Alums sending a notice of pretty much making their choice known.  I really do expect either Mariucci or Walker to get the job at UCLA. Those with money and power have made that pretty much clear.

by pablo on Dec 5, 2007 6:04 AM CST   0 recs

I can
appreciate your passion, but on a few fronts your facts are wrong. UCLA has not contacted, and will not contact Neuheisel. They are on record early on saying he will not be a candidate. Peterson is very clear that UCLA is not a fit for him and will not accept any potential offers.

As for Leach stating he'd retire from Tech, that makes me laugh inside a little. I'm not sure where you get your data, but Leach likes - not loves - Tech and Lubbock. There are probably 10 schools he'd bolt for if the money was comparable to Tech. We may even be slightly surprised at which schools they are if we could peek inside that jumbled brain of his. I don't have any insider dish on that, but I don't think Leach views Tech as his one and only D-I gig. Obviously, as fans we think our school and our situation is perfect. To an outsider, though, which Leach is, it's just a job. A good one, but still just a job.

I still say if we don't at LEAST win the south next year, given the returning players and experience level, that consideration will be given to replacing him - especially if the defense does not show marked improvement and we don't win the south. And I am 100% positive that people with more clout than any of us are saying the same thing (major donors and boosters and administration members talk about this topic pretty frequently - it's keeping the heat off Knight at the moment. Though by the same token some will forever be Leach people, which is fine also).
