KenPom Rankings for Non-Conference Cupcakes

As promised, I thought we'd take a look at the final KenPom Rankings for Tech's non-conference schedule for the 2007-2008 year (for reference purposes, Texas Tech finished 70th):

  • University of California, Riverside: 306
  • Sam Houston State University: 155
  • Stephen F. Austin: 214
  • GAS
    • Butler: 25
    • Gonzaga: 55
    • Liberty: 215
    • Michigan: 54
    • Washington State: 29
    • Western Kentucky: 144
    • Alaska Anchorage: ?
  • TCU: 152
  • Centenary: 248
  • Louisiana Tech: 189
  • New Mexico: 128
  • Stanford (Dallas - American Airlines Center): 53
  • Northwestern State: 186
  • Lamar: 227
  • UTEP: 126

Some quick math tells us that the average ranking of the non-conference teams that Tech will play, excluding the GAS, is 180. That's freaking outstanding. I know, some of the teams in the GAS might improve this average, but I'm thoroughly impressed by the level of opposing talent.

I think we can all admit that this is a little ridiculous.

Could it have possibly
been more difficult to put together such a craptastic schedule than a schedule with some decent talent?  Also, with having Bob Knight as your coach you'd think that you could play some decent teams, but apparently that's not even remotely true.

How dare you
slander Alaska Anchorage and Riverside.

I could not find a ranking for A. Anchorage
and assumed that they were some sort of club team.
