Bob Knight Resigns Immediately

Holy smokes!! According to DMN's Tim MacMahon, Bob Knight has resigned, effective immediately. I'm in shock. I'm sure I'll have more details as they become available. Completely in shock.

Update [2008-2-4 20:5:27 by Seth C]: I just noticed that DTN reader kayakyakr had a diary on this, and good friends Disco Tech! sent me an email earlier this evening.

Update [2008-2-4 20:10:52 by Seth C]: Per ESPN, here's a quote from Texas Tech spokesperson, Sally Logue Post:

"Coach Knight has had a great career. His coaching record speaks for itself. His love for basketball is clear, but most importantly his love for teaching and the students has been a hallmark of his tenure here at Texas Tech," said Sally Logue Post, a spokeswoman for Texas Tech.

Update [2008-2-4 20:22:57 by Seth C]: ESPN's Andy Katz:

Update [2008-2-4 20:31:25 by Seth C]: Per the Lubbock Avalanche Journal:

"There’s a transition that’s going to take place here from me to Pat and I’ve dwelt on this all year long — about what would be the best way to do this, and how it would be best for him and for the team and for what we can do in the long run to make this the best thing for Texas Tech," said Knight, who retires with 902 career victories. "I didn’t know, I’ve never really known when I was going to step down from this job. As I thought about it, my first thought was at the end of this season."

"My thinking was that for Pat and for this team — most of which is returning next year — the best thing for the long run for this team would be for Pat and his staff to coach these remaining 10 games," Knight said. "And (to) get an understanding, get a real feel for each other, be able to think over the course of the spring and summer going into next season about how people had played, how things had been done offensively or defensively, what could be done or couldn’t be done, what to stay away from, what to work on and develop that from a game standpoint as the coach in charge of everything rather than as an assistant coach.

"It was always a problem for me as to just what would be the most effective way in this transition, to make this transition. And with all the thought that I put into it, that’s exactly how I felt that it should be."

this is stunning and bizarre
I hope more details leak out over the next few days.
  1. Is he really just "tired" or is something deeper going on? I cant see that he's lost the team or anything like that, if anything, the team's responded really well the last month or so.
  2. Will Knight resurface again? I don't think he'll be happy with 902. Not by a long shot.
  3. How the team feels, how long have they known?
Honestly, I think this is a pretty weak move. Knight would be irate if a player left the team midseason, and I can't help but be a little annoyed by this.

I'm still trying to figure out
what I think about all of this. I think I need to see him say that he's done to believe it. I need to see him hand over the reigns to Pat.

If Knight resurfaces, who embraces him the way that Texas Tech did? There's got to be two to dance, I just can't figure out who that other dance partner would be.

On the other hand what if he's really done and just wants to be a grandfather? Can that really even happen to a guy like Knight? Just be normal?

The news story linked above said that he told them Monday morning.

I think I just need to hear it from him. I need to hear him speak and I'll have a better idea about what's next.

Go Raiders . . .

the bit about making a transition makes sense
but the stuff i heard was all about how he is resigning, not retiring...

Tech was a perfect situation for Knight, I really believe.

I can't think of a better fit.
