Texas Tech Friday Morning Notes - We Need Our Starter To Go Deeper Edition

Double-T Nation News:

No "DTN's Top ____" this morning, long day in court yesterday and no work today. Taking it easy.

Texas Tech Basketball:

What do you know. South Plains College wins again, with Texas Tech recruit Nick Okorie scoring 14 points, all in the second half to lead SPC to a 66-61 win over Indian Hills. There is no official boxscore posted quite yet. Also of note, Texas Tech's other JUCO commitment, Darko Cohadarevic's Seward team beat NE Oklahoma A&M 68-61 (again, no boxscore), which means Okorie's and Cohadarevic's teams will meet up tonight at 8:00 p.m. in a semi-final game.

Texas Tech Baseball:

Date Texas Tech Texas Result
Thursday 03/20/08 @ 6:05 p.m. 6 (L, Nate Karns, 1-3) 22 (W, Brandon Workman, 3-1) Boxscore
Friday 03/21/08 @ 6:05 p.m. AJ Ramos (1-2, 5.73) Kenn Kasparek (1-1, 4.24) Boxscore
Saturday 03/22/08 @ 12:00 p.m. Chad Bettis (3-0, 3.24) TBA Boxscore

Yesterday, Dan Spencer said that he didn't have many options regarding that 1st and 2nd starter in Ramos and Karns. Last night, the Red Raiders were absolutely hammered, losing to the Longhorns, 22-6 (that's not a typo). Nate Karns gave up 8 earned runs in 2.2 innings off of 6 hits, 6 WALKS, and 1 strikeout. The bullpen wasn't much better as Brian Cloud gave up 9 hits, 6 earned runs, walking 1 and striking out 1 and Jordan Stern pitched 0.2 innings, giving up 5 runs off of 3 hits, 2 walks and striking out none. Brutal, absolutely brutal.

I'm not sure the offense matters much when you are down by a crap-load, but Monk Kreder had a home run and 2 RBI, while Taylor Ashby went 2-4 with 2 RBI. Kieschnick went 0-5 for the day.

LAJ's George Watson recaps yesterday's game, and had this on Karns' performance:

Karns was ineffective from the start, walking the first two batters he faced - and six total - while throwing 76 pitches to just 18 batters over 22/3 innings. He has now allowed 20 runs on 13 hits and 15 walks in his last three starts since a 7-3 win over Tennessee on March 1.

Coach Larry Hays had this to say about his starter:

"We need our starter to go deeper in the game than that," Tech head coach Larry Hays said. "We got behind so we gave some guys who hadn't pitched in a while a chance to pitch, and that puts us in a position to where we can put our best foot forward (today)."

Ramos had better pitch the game of his life today.
