Texas Tech Baseball Report - 03/30/08

Perhaps a season changing weekend? I can only hope. What an incredible three game series with the #2 Missouri Tigers as the Red Raiders finally won a conference series in dramatic fashion.

Today, the Red Raiders beat the Tigers 15-11 (see boxscore below), scoring 6 runs in the 9th inning, behind a grand slam from Doug Thennis. Chad Bettis was great today, in fact he struggled. Pitching only 4.1 innings, giving up 9 hits, 7 runs, 6 earned, walking 3 and striking out only 1. The bullpen pitched well until Zach Stewart was up in the 8th and 9th inning where in 2.1 innings he gave up 6 hits, 4 runs, walking none and striking out 3. It was the 8th inning that was the problem where he gave up 2 of those runs, but pitched a perfect 9th inning.

At the plate, it was Doug Thennis who hit the grand slam, but he also went 3-3 for the day with 6 RBI, while Willie Rueda went 4-6 with 4 RBI. For the day, the offense had 16 hits against a Missouri pitching staff that didn't give up a run to Baylor last weekend. Pat yourselves on the back. Today was a good day.

Let's take a look at this week's scores:

Date Texas Tech UC Riverside Result
Mon. 03/24/08 @ 6:05 p.m. 5 (W: Zach Stewart, 1-0) 4 (L: Ryan Platt, 0-1) Boxscore
Tue. 03/25/08 @ 2:00 p.m. 6 (L: Sam Janca, 1-1) 8 (W: Paul Applebee, 1-4) Boxscore
Date Texas Tech Missouri Result
Fri. 03/28/08 @ 6:05 p.m. 0 (L: Nate Karns, 1-4) 1 (W: Aaron Crow, 6-0) Boxscore
Sat. 03/29/08 @ 2:00 p.m. 3 (W: Brian Cloud, 1-0) 2 (L: Tepesch, 0-1) Boxscore
Sun. 03/30/08 @ 1:00 p.m. 15 (W: Zach Stewart, 2-0) 11 (L: Tyler Clark, 1-1) Boxscore

For the week, the team went 3-2 and won a conference series against the best team in the Big 12. That's not bad.

Taylor Ashby .250 96 24 1 18 .323 .299

Player of the Week: Another easy week. Doug Thennis. Thennis drove home the tying run on Saturday and hit a grand slam on Sunday. Boom goes the dynamite. For the week Thennis was 7 for 19, had a home run and 7 RBI.

Starting pitching statistics:

Player W-L ERA IP H R BB SO
Chad Bettis 3-1 4.75 36.0 29 24 16 22
AJ Ramos 1-2 5.29 34.0 27 20 24 43
Nate Karns 1-4 9.84 24.2 24 27 25 23
Cory Large 1-0 6.19 16.0 16 12 5 8
Brian Cloud 1-0 4.35 20.2 22 13 8 21

Pitcher of the Week: Not really a question this week, it's got to be Nate Karns. I'm happy for Karns and I'm real happy for this team as they had to have Karns start pitching well, especially since they moved him to Friday night. Dan Spencer's gamble paid off and I'm glad it did. Karns pitched 5.1 innings, gave up 6 hits, 1 run and struck out 5. Congrats.

yes, I hope that
these guys are able to turn it around. It doesn't get any easier b/c they go to Lincoln this weekend and Nebraska has been pretty good this year.
Go Raiders . . .

ERA
Pitching seems to be the biggest problem. We have been hitting the ball well, but can't seem to shut anyone down with the pitching

Pitching
Bettis and Stewart having an off day the same day was a bit scary, but hitting pulled it out for the team.  Stewart showed what he's made of coming out in the 9th and striking out 2 and getting the other batter to line out.  You can't be superman every game and Bettis and Stewart, along with the rest of the Red Raiders, are going to take this team all the way.

Go Red Raiders!!
